How to Add Multiple Barcodes to an Item?
Follow this guide to complete the task in xPower.
Add Multiple Barcodes to an Item
XPower allows you to maintain multiple barcode numbers for a single item. This is useful when a product has more than one barcode or when different barcode labels are used for the same item.
Before You Begin
- Ensure you have access to Item Create.
- Identify the item for which you want to maintain barcodes.
- Prepare the required barcode numbers.
- Check that the barcodes are not already assigned to another item in the relevant branch.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Open Item Create.
- To maintain an existing item, locate it using Item List and click the required record.
- Under General Details, locate the Barcode section.
- Enter the first barcode in Barcode 1.
- To use the Item No as a barcode, select Copy item code as barcode.
- To add another barcode, click Add Barcode.
- A new barcode input field is displayed.
- Enter the additional barcode number.
- Repeat the process for any further barcodes.
- To remove an unwanted barcode entry, use the delete icon beside the relevant field.
- After completing the barcode information, click Save for a new item or Update for an existing item.
Field Reference
| Field | Purpose | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barcode 1 | Primary barcode entry. | Optional | Available in General Details. |
| Additional Barcode | Additional barcode for the same item. | Optional | Added using Add Barcode. |
| Copy item code as barcode | Copies the Item No into the barcode field. | Optional | Use when the item code should also serve as a barcode. |
Important Rules
- An item can have more than one barcode.
- The system checks whether an entered barcode already belongs to another item in the current branch.
- If a matching barcode exists, a warning identifies the existing item.
- The duplicate check excludes the currently selected item when editing its own barcode information.
- When an existing item's barcodes are updated, its saved barcode entries are replaced by the barcode values submitted through the form for the selected branches.
- Blank barcode entries are not inserted during saving.
Important: Review all existing barcode entries before clicking Update. Removing an existing barcode from the form may remove that barcode from the item's saved barcode list.
Common Issues
- Problem: Barcode already assigned to another item. Check the item information displayed in the duplicate warning and correct the barcode if necessary.
- Problem: An additional barcode field is not visible. Click Add Barcode to display another field.
- Problem: An existing barcode disappeared after updating. Review the complete barcode list before saving, because the saved entries are replaced using the submitted values.
After Saving
The barcode entries are associated with the selected item and applicable branches. They can subsequently be used through the relevant item-search and barcode-supported functions in XPower.
